What is Y2k Fashion?
Y2k fashion first became popularised in the late 90s and early 2000s. The name originated from the thought that computers wouldn’t be able to process dates beyond December 31st 1999. The origins of the style were characterised by a digital/cyber look due to the advances in technology like mobile phones and video games. The most common colours were silver, black, chrome and bright oranges.
It is important to mention that the y2k fashion aesthetic was heavily influenced by the black community especially people like: Aaliyah, TLC, Rihanna, Miss Teeq, Blaque, Brandi & Monica, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Naomi. However, they were called ghetto and trashy for this. When celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears started dressing like this it became more accepted in the mid 2000s.
Nowadays, the y2k aesthetic is quite different and just takes the main trends from the 2000s. Some aesthetics that might get confused with y2k is indie and soft girl aesthetics because they are quite similar.

Y2k fits normally include bright bold colours like pink. Other colours like blue, red and green are also worn a lot. The outfits tend to be monochromatic so just one colour.

Now you might be thinking where should I go to find all these things. I have a few suggestions for you. Start by asking your parents for some of their old clothes. They did live through the 2000s. You could also check out any thrift stores or charity shops. If you don’t find luck with any of these, you can try some online stores. If you’re on a really tight budget try Amazon, Romwe or Aliexpress.
